I started Mission 101 at the beginning of the year, not sure whether or not I would actually stick to it. And lo and behold- I did! Here's the progress I've made in January 2017. (Complete list)

Goals complete: None yet!
Goals failed: None yet!
Goals in progress: 18

- 2. Do some kind of language practice (Irish, German, or Spanish) for 15 minutes at least twice a week- Been doing Irish practice twice a week, although I need to be more proactive and not do it at the last minute.

- 10. Spend 30 minutes working on hitRECord.org (or catching up on the website) at least twice a week- Done. (Same critique as #2, though- I need to not put this goal off till the eleventh hour.)

- 14. Stretch at least once a day- Done. Working on not saving this until right before bed. (Are you noticing a pattern here, in my progress?)

- 16. Finish at least one creative project every month- This month I submitted a photo to HitRECord as my creative project.

- 26. Cook at least one new recipe each week- Done! This month I made Spinach and Garlic Spaghetti with Pecorino; English Fried Eggs and a Gammon of Bacon (from a Harry Potter cookbook!); Oregano Chicken; Easy Fluffy Scrambled Eggs; and this week's recipe (which will fall into February's progress) is Apple Walnut Salad.

- 28. Give regular offerings (no matter how big or small) to the church each week; set aside an offering for the Sundays when I’ll be absent- Done each week.

- 29. Do a breast self-exam every month- Done on January 31. I've said this many times before, but I don't know why I dislike doing these self-exams so much. I know how important they are, but I find it unpleasant and uncomfortable. So I always put this off for as long as I can.

- 41. Clear out “Immediate Interest” gmail folder and make sure everything in it is taken care of- Started this.

- 42. Sort through all of my clothes, donate any I don’t want/that don’t fit, and buy new things I actually like- So far, I think I've put 2 items of clothing in my "to donate" box! There are at least 2 others that I should probably get rid of, but I couldn't commit to it. That means there'll probably be 2 rounds of weeding out clothing- once I've worn everything once, I'll go through again and be more discerning in my choices.

- 46. If long-term subbing or full time teaching, attend a public event (concert, sports game, etc.) at the school where I am subbing once a month, excluding June-August; if daily subbing, do this at any school in the area once a month- Went to a basketball game at my school on January 31.

- 47. Be less picky about substitute teaching jobs—take what is offered, rather than waiting for a more immediately appealing job- The county I primarily work in (which is right next door to Washington D.C.) had Inauguration Day off, but the other county I substitute teach in had classes that day. So I used one of my rare days off to go into work in the other county and cover an honors algebra class for 90 minutes. Easy as it was, I think I should get extra bonus points for going into work on what was supposed to be a day off for me. Commitment to "being less picky," indeed!

- 52. Randomly compliment a stranger 101 times- Did this one time!

- 56. Read at least one news article, in print or online, each day- Done.

- 70. Watch all the films nominated for the Best Picture Oscar each year- Started watching this year's Oscar nominees! This month, the one I was able to go watch was Moonlight. It was a good movie, definitely deserving of the nomination- but I sense it's not gonna be my favorite of this year's Best Picture picks.

- 74. Go through all the bookmarked links in the “Things I Still Need to Look At” bookmarks folder and do the things in them- I'm still adding to this all the time, but I did remove a couple of things, including this recipe and this playlist.

- 78. Post photos to facebook once a month- Done!

- 80. Take a bath (instead of a shower) at least once a month- Done.

- 84. Leave a review for each movie I rent on Netflix during the Mission 101 period- Wrote a review for Adam. (I'll probably write a review for Moonlight too, even though I didn't rent it from Netflix, because I technically had put it on my list in case it left the movie theatres before I could see it.)

I think revamping my approach to the day-to-day, in addition to doing Mission 101, has really helped me make some progress. I used to hold myself to a lot of standards that weren't part of my M101 goals but that I was prioritizing on top of them; in 2017, I'm being less demanding of myself. So far I have up days and down days, but it's not as big a deal when I struggle. I fully expect to be posting another update in March. :)

HitRECord is a really cool site! It was started by the actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt back in like 2009 or 2010, although he's a bit less hands-on involved now than he was then. It's a sort of open-to-all production company that is designed to foster creative collaboration between people from all different locations using the internet. So people can post random work that they have individually, or they can contribute to existing projects (or create their own projects!). Some are just for collaboration's sake, and some that are official production initiatives are released as merchandise and you can get paid for contributing to them if your work is used. Everything submitted to the site is automatically regarded as public domain, so you can remix and reuse what another user submits. It's a really cool site, and even though I've fallen off the wagon of being involved in the last year or so, I'm eager to get back into it. :)
