December 2015 and January 2016 update

Feb. 1st, 2016 | 09:27 pm
posted by: shimmerdream in mission101

Goals completed

11. Register with a GP – I filled in the forms at the end of November, but I think the registration was only processed at the beginning of December, so I’m saying this is a December achievement.

64. Buy work trousers that actually fit – I did some shopping in the January sales

69. Get another piercing in each ear – Done on 8.1.16

92. Investigate trampoline lessons – I’d completely forgotten this was on my list but, coincidentally, I did an exercise lesson on a trampoline on 29.1.16. It turns out trampolining is much harder than it looks.

Goals in progress

19. Stop procrastinating: Don’t stop to listen to music until I’ve done everything I need for the evening (200/396) – It looks as if, at the moment, I’ve achieved this more often than not.

72. Donate 1,000,000 grains at http://freerice.com (398,000 / 1,000,000) – 64,000 grains donated in December and January.

83. Keep a personal diary for at least a year and 84. Write something good that happened in personal diary, at least one a week for a year – I started these, again, on 1 January. I think I got as far as May last year, so we’ll see how long this attempt lasts.

93. Read 100 books by authors I haven’t read (13/100) – 29.12.16: Finished The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion

5th update!

Jan. 31st, 2016 | 04:32 am
posted by: laeryn in mission101

I usually wait a bit more before I make another update (it's been less than a month) but I have a few resolutions for this couple of months to come so I wanted to put them down in writing. When you're tackling new goals, I think, it's always good to revisit your old ones, how well or bad you're doing at them, so here I am!

Here's my list!

IN PROGRESS

1. Read 101 books. (13/101)
Last year, after finishing Neil Gaiman's Coraline which I already counted in that recap, I read Stephen King's Cycle of the Werewolf, which I really loved. I missed my monstruous werewolves. This year I've already read Susan Baker's The Incarnations and Okakura Kakuzō's The Book of Tea, which makes 13 so far.

2. Complete Goodreads 2016 reading challenge. (2/24)
The Incarnations and The Book of Tea are the ones that count for that :) It's two a month in the end because this is my last year at uni, it's going to be busy, and I'm not sure what will be of me after graduation, so I wanted to keep it real. 24 is it and currently on track.

7. Read books by authors from 11 different countries. (2/11)
8. Read 11 non-fiction books. (2/11)

The Book of Tea is written by Japanese author Okakura Kakuzō and it is non-fiction. I'll take the chance to recommend it. It's SO beautifully written and gives you a good insight into the history of tea and how it came to become so prominent in (not only) Japanese culture. I just included it on my Favorites shelf at Goodreads; I'm in awe. I can link you to my review if anyone is thinking of reading it. I was dubious to include this in #7, because I have in fact read Japanese books before, but not nearly as much as I do books from English speaking countries, so I'm keeping it in. After all, for me it's very important to read Japanese authors; I study the language and it's only fair I make the effort to understand what's behind it.

11. Watch 101 movies. (17/101)
I've watched a lot of movies (because: exams period! haha). Jack Reacher, Alan Rickman's Sense and Sensibility, Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan live action movie) and the three Rurouni Kenshin live action movies: Rurouni Kenshin, Kyoto Inferno and The Legend Ends.

More under the cut because it turned out to be quite a long update!Collapse )

I've suddenly discovered, that Yagudin is alive and... he's a miracle!
Now my great goals are:

1. Show him to my off-line friends.
2. Give 1 more present (handmade) (not connected with Yagudin)
3. Visit my grandpa
4. See my 1st friend in this new journal
(at last!)
(I have Russian friends, but this journal is not for Russians...)
5. See... 101 friend (later)
6. See somebody, who will say in my journal: "Yes, New Year Moscow is amazing indeed!"
(you may see fantastic New Year Moscow!!)
7. See somebody, who will say in my journal: "Yes, Yagudin is great! I haven't seen him before."
(you may see: he is full of drive!!)
8. See people, who will say: "I love him! I didn't know, he was still skating."
9. See people, who watched all his programmes, but couldn't know the things, that I'm going to tell, that only russians know
(there are such people, I've seen their forum - nearly alive)
10. See somebody, who will say: "Yes, russians are the happiest people in the world!"
(you may hear our song to feel that! - translated)

Ding, ding, ding! Round 2 - start date Jan 3rd 2016 - end Sept 30th 2019

A bit about me: Hi I'm Piper :D. I'm 30-something, British and this is my second attempt at Mission 101. The first attempt failed quite spectacularly with my procrastination skills kicking in full force after the first three months. This time around I'm taking out the more unrealistic goals and attempting to do much better.

My main love is Natural History, although that has nothing to do with my current job. That is something I hope to change in the near future which is why it’s at the top of my goal list. My main other interest is fandom and I lurk in quite a few, under my fandom journal. I’m finally hoping to be more active in some and I’ve added those to my goals too, through writing mainly, as well as writing more original fic. I’m also hoping to expand and vary my interests so I’ve got a few goals to help with this. And the others are just for fun.

Start date: Jan 3rd 2016
End date: Sept 30th 2019

And I've deliberately left room to add some as life will always throw up surprises.

I hope I've worded these in such a way that they are specific enough for the challenge but flexible enough to still be fun. And I hope my LJ cuts work.

Here's to the next 2.75 years!

My all-new Mission 101 in 1001 (January 1 2016 - September 28 2018)

Jan. 2nd, 2016 | 07:11 pm
posted by: my_mission_101 in mission101

Hi guys,

Some of you probably remember me, but my old computer broke down and I don't remember my Mission 101 login :) So I was forced to create a new account.

I've been doing Mission 101 since 2007 - a very memorable year for me because doing Mission 101 actually changed my life that year. Even though I failed to complete several items, the most important item on my list - and the most impossible because it involved a lot of resistance from bureaucracy and administration - got done naturally and easily as if by magic, with almost no effort on my part.

It was then that I realized the importance of committing our wildest dreams to paper and saying them out loud for everyone to hear. Once you do it, they tend to come true. Since then, I did two more Mission 101 runs, every time including one desperately impossible goal - and sure enough, it got done. It was as if by writing it down and reporting it here, I set some celestial gears into motion. Absolutely incredible.

But this time's list is much more evolved and personal and it contains no items of "magical" value. So I'm not even inviting anyone to read it as it's probably of no use to most people, even as inspiration. But still I'm going to publish it here in order to commit to my own little challenges.

So here we go...Collapse )

Happy New Year everyone! Good luck to us all!

4th update!

Hello guys! Happy new year to everybody, hope you were lucky to start the new year on a happy note and that 2016 is wonderful for you :')

I wanted to start the year reviewing my progress (or lack thereof) so I know what to work on during this year, so here goes a new update of how things are going!

The list!

IN PROGRESS

1. Read 101 books. (10/101)
I read Neil Gaiman's Coraline. Finally! I've been a little slow in this regard but I hope 2016 helps out with this. I aim for 24 books because I couldn't finish last years goodreads' challenge (where I aimed at 35). Let's see how it goes!

11. Watch 101 movies. (11/101)
I watched Mockingjay pt.2 and in the aftermath I felt like rewatching The Hunger Games and Catching fire. I caught Hachi: A Dog's Tale on TV with my mother (and felt inclined to watch it because I've been in Tokyo where the statue of the real Hachi is). Then of course I also watched Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That makes for 5 more movies before 2015 was over!

58. Learn 7 new recipes (baking excluded). (2/7)
Miso soup. It's very healthy, extremely easy to make, and delicious! It was a regular in my diet while I was in Japan and I just missed it too much. Now it's also a regular in my diet here!

59. Cook for my mom at least 3 times. (1/3)
I made miso soup for her and she loved it!

77. Plan and stick to a budget during my final year of uni in Madrid. (4/10)
78. Keep a written track of my expenses during those months. (4/10)

The cashbook I mentioned in this entry is really super useful. On occasions I've gone into negative numbers but I don't consider it failing to stick to my budget because I managed with the following month's money. Since September is that weird month I moved into a new house and needed to buy tons of things, it took me a while, but finally I finished December with some savings -- even after getting a new tattoo and buying concert tickets! Woohoo!

COMPLETED

73. Complete NaNoWriMo. ✓
I DID THIS! I completed it at 53,529 words! It is my first time EVER and I am so so so happy about this!

SOME CHANGES

In my entry I mentioned I had to find a substitute for the already failed 76. Save 1€/day for the whole duration of this challenge. I happen to not know the etiquette for this: do I substitute it or do I have to leave it in the list as FAILED and just use one of my free spots? It would be of great help to know this. For now I'm trying to decide on which way of saving will I use it in its place.

Another change is that I had 54. Pass the JLPT N4 official examination. (N4 is one of the official exams to sit for Japanese) but I've decided I'm going straight for the following one (N3), so I'm substituting it for *54. Complete the 2016 getyourwordsout challenge. Pledge: 250,000 words.

First Update of the New Year!

Another late weekly update!

In progress:

Still doing daily Sun Salutations and cycling to Mordor. (6 - 5) (6 - 6)

Comments (when possible) and updating. (7 - 1) (1 - 3)

Today marks my first revision. And while I like the idea of the 52-week savings challenge, right now it's just stressing me out while money is already tight. I'll come back to it when my income is more regular, but for now I'm going to have to put it to the side. The other thing I'm altering, slightly, is my microloans goal. Unless very carefully researched and applied judiciously, they can either support predatory loaning companies or destroy local economies (or both). In the future my microloan investments are going to be either for housing or education, as they seem to have no negative ripple effects. (1 - 2)

The first Facebook purge of the list! (8 - 1)

Learned a new maille weave over Christmas. (2 - 1)

I watched the entire first season of Adam Ruins Everything over Christmas break as well, which I'm counting as a documentary. (9 - 4)
